102416-AlexCalleja_PUSHER.jpgIn the world stage, Filipinos always nail the biggest accolades.

Who could forget Pia Wurtzbach’s shining moment as the third Filipina Miss Universe last year, and of course Hidilyn Diaz’s glorious burst of strength in the Rio Olympics, copping the Silver in the women’s weightlifting competition.

This year alone, Jaclyn Jose’s breathtaking and historic Best Actress win at Cannes and the Best Picture triumph of Lav Diaz’s epic masterpiece Ang Babaeng Humayo in the Venice International Film Festival truly emphasize how Filipinos can bring out their best.

Of course, Filipinos are superbly renowned in the performance stage, as singers, dancers, and other artists have dominated the global scene.

Nation of singers

From the time Pilita Corrales won the Tokyo Music Festival in 1972, other singers, notably Celeste Legaspi, Ivy Violan, Dulce, Regine Velasquez, Jed Madela, and Jonalyn Viray through the years have placed the Philippines consistently on top of international singing tilts. This earned our reputation as the nation of singers.

Not to mention the incredible brilliance our chorale groups have shown in global competitions, especially the Philippine Madrigal Singers, which won the 64th International Chorale Competition in Arezzo, Italy last August.

Sleekest dance moves

While Filipinos lead the way in vocal virtuosity, no one can deny that the country truly has peeps with those sleekest moves on the dance floor. From the Bayanihan and the Ramon Obusan Dance Troupe, which had brought honor to the country in terms of ethnic dance to the recent Gold Medal victory of uPeepz in the 2016 World Hiphop Dance Competition, the Philippines will always become a feared talent force.

Even in those ingenious, out-of-the-box performances that captured last year’s Asia’s Got Talent season, when El Gamma Penumbra’s amazing shadow play left the world in awe and made them the Grand Winners.

“Funniest Person in the World”

And amid all these incredible feats, one more Filipino is seeking the same glory in an area that’s surely considered a recognized strength—comedy. Popular Pinoy stand-up comic and TV comedy show writer Alex Calleja is one of 20 semifinalists vying to become the “Funniest Person in the World.”

Alex, who also writes for ABS-CBN shows Goin’ Bulilit, It’s Showtime, and Funny Ka, Pare Ko, is one who well represents the wonder of Pinoy humor. From just doing small stand-up shows in Ortigas, Alex went on to perform in various comedy clubs around the world, leaving his international audience rolling in the aisles. Indeed, a perfect choice to make the Philippines known around the world as a land of great comedians.
